Fun Backyard Retreat

This backyard wanted a new life and it needed to be integrated within the family dynamics. In the original design, a fence cut of the natural flow to the backyard and a large heavy table blocked the way, thus the yard did not feel open or inviting.

Right up front, I removed all the visual barriers and created a patio that softly eased into the grass area behind it. It was covered by a large pergola that was designed to give shade, as well as to clean up the architectural line of the back elevation of the house. I used beautiful cast concrete columns finished in an oatmeal patina and natural honey ledge stone to bring warmth and a natural feel into the backyard.

The dark stained wood of the pergola structure created a nice contrast to the house color and the stone. The patio floor is matched with large patterned colored cement. Stepped planters that create a line with the backyard stairs flow into the expanse of the lawn that is actually covered in fake grass. Another energy efficient feature is the LED landscape light. As a fun bonus, we built a fire pit for mellow summer nights making smores, or enjoying a relaxing break around the fire.

The deliciously comfortable couches and rocking chairs were chosen by Karin Wittich Designs.
