A timeless and modern transformation

Location: San Diego, Ca

Architecture and Design: Stefani Conniff

The tired and old fashioned facade of this California home was transformed into a trendy, modern stunner. The interactive play of smooth stucco and shiplap siding create a visual interest and a modern dynamic. The color scheme ranges from warm grey to a deep slate for the casings and it emphasizes the fresh new design and architectural features.

The drought resistant landscape softens the lines and adds an organic compound to the house.

In addition to the main house, the two adjacent bungalows were also transformed to match the style of the house. Features like the metal awnings create an industrial effect and lend a three dimensional component to the flat facade. In addition, the inset wood slats provide shade as a functional element, and a tie in to the wood features as a visual element.

The color scheme plays an important part in the design. The white windows are contrasted by the slate blue colored casings. The soft, warm grey siding provides a pleasant backdrop to the California grass and shrub. Many of the plantings are designed to bloom orange, which is the complementary color of blue and therefore it will pop from the steel grey smooth stucco parts of the house. The warm orange color is introduced into the custom made awning by wooden slats that are providing shade for the window.

A modern pergola covers one of the bungalow’s patios. It’s design mirrors the awnings over the windows and entries. The I-beam structure is painted with the slate blue color and the wood slats match the stain of the fence.

The courtyard is again landscaped with drought resistant, mostly native plants. Their organic nature offsets the clean, horizontal lines of the buildings and provides a visually soft environment.

The property is surrounded by a large fence to provide privacy. The veritical installed boards feel peaceful and aligned with the homes behind. The planters offer a playful and artsy break to the long fence, and provide a beautiful conversation piece.

The succulent’s beautiful, natural colors ranging form the soft purples to the warm oranges enhance, complement and nestle into the color scheme. Every detail is in harmony with itself and its surrounding.

Overall, the transformation from old and tired adobe buildings, and the outdated main house is refreshing, architectural and amazing. This is a true oasis behind a beautiful, artist inspired fence.
